Rumors of the death of HP-UX have been greatly exaggerated.

I recently had the opportunity to attend HP’s annual UNIX Ambassador Symposium. This meeting serves as a kind of “State of the Union” meeting for anything and everything having to do with HP-UX and the Business Critical Server (BCS) product line. I have to admit it was certainly an eye-opening experience. While I don’t have enough space to go over everything that was covered, I will say that Intel’s announcement of the newest Itanium processor, Tukwila, has generated a lot of excitement with HP. That, and getting a glimpse into HP’s plans for the Converged Infrastructure and how the mission critical nature of HP-UX can fit into that strategy moving forward, is kind of exciting. Well, as exciting as any product strategy can be… If you’d like to hear more about the BCS product line and mission critical HP-UX, contact your Mobius Partners Account Executive and we would be happy to get you more information. – Dwane Ballard

4.20.09 - VMware Partner Exchange:

I just got back from Disney World, but no, I wasn’t there on vacation. VMware hosted its Partner Exchange conference in Orlando at the Dolphin Disney World resort and I was fired up to attend and represent Mobius Partners.

If you haven't heard, there are a LOT of new things coming with the next release of VMware. Not only with the server products but also with its desktop products. A lot of what I saw was under NDA, so I can't disclose everything I learned last week, but here are a few highlights I believe are okay to share.

First off, there is a new Virtual Center that will be available. The design of this new VC is somewhat different than 2.5, but I liked it. I was intuitive and easy to drive.

As well as VC, ESX is getting an upgrade. One thing to mention here is there are some special steps to effectively upgrade your hardware and virtual machines. From what I saw last week ,VMware has put a lot of effort into identifying these steps. Look for us here at Mobius Partners to have this upgrade in our demo center in Plano very soon. I plan to practice this upgrade thoroughly and then turn that into a service that we can offer our customers.

Some new things you will see with the next release includes distributed switching in which you will see the same virtual switch on all ESX servers. Also, with keeping everything uniform, and without saying too much, look for a tool to push a standard configuration to your new or existing ESX servers. Another cool new added feature is Fault Tolerance. This will give you the ability to protect critical VMs in the event of a hardware failure, no downtime!.... but there are some caveats to this, talk to me and I'll tell you more.

Space is limited here for me, but I just want to get across if you are using VMware currently, you will want to upgrade. There are a lot of new and exciting features that VMware has put into this release. I will be working hard to learn them all and deliver value to our existing and new customers around upgrades and configurations.
